"Bill McGowan will go down in business history as one of America's foremost entrepreneurs.... Probably more than any other single person he helped to reshape the long-distance business from the monopoly that it had been for so long to the highly competitive industry that we know today."

LetterGreetings!

WTTW National Productions and APT are excited to bring you a compelling documentary--Long Distance Warrior.  In this one-hour story, viewers will become acquainted with the "most famous man" they've never heard of.

His name was Bill McGowan, a modern-day David in a business suit who fought Goliath on the corporate battlefield, and although his name may not be on the tip of everyone's tongue, virtually every American benefited from his struggles.  He took on the most powerful monopoly of his time--AT&T and its MaBell System of local phone comanies--and won against all odds!  Our viewers remember all too well the days when placing long distance phone calls was so expensive it was prohibitive except for emergencies, very special occasions, and for business purposes.

McGowan changed all that in his 16-year battles with AT&T as he helped usher in the Information Age by unlesashing the forces of competition and change and transforming long distance service into a cheap commodity.  Building  a tiny company called MCI into a telecommunications powerhouse, Bill McGowan was the Long Distance Warrior.

In this gripping case study of the kind of determination and calculated risk-taking necessary to spark real change, Long Distance Warrior is a classic American success story.

Long Distance Warrior is a co-production of Sarah Holt (Holt Productions, LLC) and Bestor Cram (Northern Light Productions). The program is presented by WTTW National Productions and is distributed by APT (Exchange). The underwriter is the Hagley Museum and Library. Local underwriting is permissible.
